Article: Pakistan's real poverty. (education policy)

A CLASS of girls sits outdoors in a village in Baluchistan, the desert province in Pakistan where purdah is strictly enforced and the female literacy rate in the countryside is 2%. A ten-year-old, asked what she hopes to do when she grows up, replies "Become an airline pilot." It seems possible that Pakistan is beginning to redress the worst of its social wrongs: a disastrous educational record. Its failure in this area has undoubtedly damaged its economy as well as the hopes of its people. As a report last year by the World Bank analysing East Asia's success pointed out, one of the few policies successful countries had in common was heavy investment in education. ...
