Women?s education 'vital' to Pakistan progress

Improving women's education levels could ensure the long-term future of Pakistan, claims National Assembly speaker Dr Fehmida Mirza.

The Daily Times reports that Dr Mirza believes that educating women needs to start within the country's schools and that the enrolment rates of girls needs to be drastically improved.

"We must not forget that no society has ever liberated itself economically, politically or socially without establishing a sound base of educated women, as they remain at the heart of every development scheme," said Dr Mithe, speaking at a ceremony marking the appointment of the newly elected college council of Islamabad Model College for Girls.

The National Assembly speaker explained that the average number of years of schooling for girls in Pakistan is just 1.2 years, with 21 schoolboys enrolled for each schoolgirl.

VSO estimate that 54 per cent of children aged between five and 14 do not attend school and the country's government spends just 1.8 per cent of its GDP on education.
